• Promoting the rights of persons with disabilities in Central Asia (+)

With the entry into force of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2008, protecting and promoting human rights of people with disabilities has emerged as a priority theme for National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) across the region. This guidance note is the result of a long-term consultative process with NHRIs and other national partners.

The guidance note brings together a number of initiatives that increase the visibility of people with disabilities and their inclusion in the society while reflecting some of the key challenges that policy changes may face in Central Asia. It also highlights and captures the important contribution that National Human Rights Institutions can make under the ten strategic areas, from non-discrimination to access to education and employment. Drawing on examples in social policy, health, education and employment, the document underlines the importance of mainstreaming initiatives related to inclusion and accessibility and stresses the potential such policies hold for societies at large.
