The Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities  is one of the newest human rights instruments of the 21st Century.  The convention symbolizes a shift in perspective from viewing persons with disabilities as ‘objects’ of protection, treatment and assistance’ to seeing them as holders of rights. The rights-based approach to disability seeks to empower disabled persons, and to ensure their active participation in political, economic, social, and cultural life in a way that is respectful and accommodating of their difference.
